Allegrini

Country: Veneto - Italy

Region: Veneto

All of Allegrini’s impeccable wines are produced from estate-grown fruit from their 90 hectares of vineyard in the communes of Sant’ Ambrogio and Fumane. Across the range and from vintage to vintage, they have superb fruit, balance, intensity, length, elegance, tipicity and, above all, drinkability.

Each wine has winemaker Franco Allegrini’s distinct stamp of quality, but every one has its own distinctive character. They are among the elite of the world’s best producers of red wines. The family has been growing grapes in Valpolicella for several generations, and the estate in its current form was founded by Giovanni Allegrini. When he died in 1983, it passed to his three children, who ran it together until Walter’s death in July 2003. Franco now looks after the vineyards and is the winemaker, while Marilisa is director of marketing. From the 2007 vintage, Franco sacrificed the Classico status of the Valpolicella and bottled the wine under Stelvin in order to eliminate as much as possible the problems of cork taint and random oxidation. Their south-east facing vineyards are located in the hills of the Valpolicella Classico region ranging from 150-250 metres above sea level for the Valpolicella to as high as 310 metres at the top of Podere La Grola where the chalky, white La Poja vineyard stretches across 2.65 hectares. Soils are very varied but mostly chalky, of volcanic origin, especially in La Poja where the soil is 78% chalk.  The older vineyards are trained using the pergola Trentina system, planted with about 3,000 vines per hectare, whereas the newer ones use the single Guyot system with 5,000 plants per hectare. The vines are 28 years old on average.

What we like to refer to as our "baby Amarone" is more approachable with its pleasant and fruity character with raisin-like qualities.

Deep, ruby red in colour, with intense perfumes of cherry-chocolate on the nose. On the palate the wine has good depth and power, with a hint of dried cherries from the 'ripasso' vinification. Smooth and full bodied, with a rounder style, lower acidity and fuller structure than a Valpolicella Classico Pairs well with a wide range of first courses, including full-flavored pasta and risotto dishes. La Grola IGT Price €32.50

FG Brand Allegrini La Grola

The Grola di Allegrini is proof of how hybridization and experimentation, in the noblest sense of the word, can bring extraordinary results. It is born from the cru on the Grola hill, from the encounter between the native vines of Valpolicella Corvina, Corvinone and Oseleta, protagonists of Amarone, and Syrah. The native grapes give explosions and freshness of fruit and acidity, while Syrah brings warm spice and velvety tannin. More than 16 months in barrque complete the path of a wine of excellent elegance, good immediately but able to challenge time.

Sensory features: Thick and dark ruby red, the nose vibrates with rich and fruity notes of dried blackberries and strawberry trees, enhanced by spicy tones of vanilla, black pepper and licorice. Palate rich, sumptuous but always fresh and drinkable, tannin arabesque and enveloping. Made from Corvina Veronese, and Oseleta grapes grown in La Grola, one of the most prestigious vineyards in the Valpolicella Classico area in terms both of history and position.

Amarone della Valpolicella Classico DOC Price €86.30

Amarone sml

Sensorial features: A well-structured, complex, elegant and velvety wine, with intense ruby red colour. Packed with fresh raspberry, blackberry, cassis, and a butterscotch note.. It has a warm and spicy bouquet, with aroma of raisins. Long finish, with ripe tannins. It is made from dried Corvina Veronese, Rondinella and Molinara grapes, by using the thousand-year-old technique of APPASSIMENTO: after being harvested, the grapes are left to dry for three to four months, Amarone is an extremely important wine in Italian viticulture, a unique and unrepeatable symbol of the Valpolicella region. In the course of time Allegrini has improved its production with the aim to best preserve the characteristics of the fruit and has established itself as one of the truest interpreters of its uniqueness. It can age for 20 years.

This wine is traditionally drunk with game, roasted and grilled meats, casseroles and well matured cheeses. Excellent with hearty dishes. Since the grapes are allowed to dry partially before fermenting, Amarone has a distinctive flavour which can also accompany new or exotic sweet and sour dishes. It is therefore also perfectly suited for drinking with Asian and middle-eastern dishes. Serve at 18 C and open the bottle an hour before drinking.

The distillation process is physical in nature, through which, using heat, it is possible to condense the volatile parts of the dregs. The "head" and "tail" are eliminated for conservation and to exalt the aromas and characteristic taste of the grapes from which the grappa is produced. Amarone grappa is refined in durmast oak casks for 12 months.
