De Martino

Country: Casablanca, Maipo, Choapo & Itata - Chile

Region: Casablanca Valley, Maipo Valley & Choapo Valley

In 1934, Pietro De Martino Pascualone arrived to Chile from his native Italy and founded Viña De Martino in Isla de Maipo, located 31 miles from Santiago between the Andes Mountains and the Pacific Ocean.  Today, the 3rd and 4th generations of the De Martino family carry forth and build upon the family legacy.  Their mission of “Reinventing Chile” represents their active role as a leader at the forefront of winemaking innovation in Chile, with a commitment to resurrecting ancient vineyards, embracing indigenous grape varieties, and promoting Chile as a producer of world class wines.

With more than 740 acres of estate-owned organic vineyards, winemaker Marcelo Retamal, a terroir-hunter, has scoured Chile in pursuit of  site-specific vineyards best suited to specific grape varieties.  Estate and grower fruit from a repertoire of 20 family growers in 8 appellations is used to create a portfolio of varietally accurate, full-bodied, and elegant wines with unique characteristics that are a true reflection of their origin.

In an effort to naturally express these elements, De Martino adheres to the following set of principles:

  • Produce wines that are a clean, honest expression of the varietal and the land, in part by using native yeasts.
  • Produce approachable, balanced wines that easily pair with food by avoiding late harvests which lower acidity, but raise alcohol levels.
  • Eliminate the use of new French oak barrels for aging to enhance freshness, balance, and accentuate the natural varietal characteristics.

In 1998, De Martino embarked on a pioneering project to convert their traditional viticultural practices to 100% organic out of respect for the land. De Martino celebrated their first harvest of certified organic grapes in 2001; today, they are the second largest producer of organic wines in Chile.

Showcasing Chile’s diversity, the De Martino portfolio is globally recognized for outstanding quality.

Alto de Piedras Carmenère DO - Single Vineyard Price € 37.70

demartino alto de piedras carmenere

These single vineyard wines, from very small properties and limited production, are the fruit of the work we started in 1996 investigating Chile from north to south and vinifying over 350 different terroirs. Of these, only a few were selected, with the objective to create wines that are a true reflection of their origin. This line shows the diversity of Chile and represents its best terroirs. It is a journey through our geography, where each wine tells us a new and unique story.

Sensory features: This prize-winning Carmenère is a brilliant deep, dark purplish colour, nicely framed with roasted tobacco and loam notes, with a core of crushed plum, steeped black currant and sage in reserve. The finish is muscular, but rounded and integrated, with the loamy edge lingering.

Technical Notes:
Grape variety: 100% Carmenère, ungrafted, with trellising and 5,000 vines per hectare.
Soil: Alluvial terraces with deposits from the Maipo River, which transported volcanic rock from the Andes Mountain Range towards the valley. It is a heterogeneous soil profile, typical of alluvial terraces with an abundance of pebbles from volcanic rock. On average the rock appears at a depth of 1.4m. The proportion of silt, sand and clay vary according to the depth: the greater the depth, the more sand and less clay there is. An average yield of 1.7 Kg per vine.

Ageing: The wine is aged for two years in oak foudres, with the aim of ensuring that the aromas and tastes from the wood are not transferred to the wine and thus do not mask the
characteristics typical of its terroir

Viejas Tinajas Muscat Price € 22.50

Chili wit De Martino Viejas Tinajas Muscat

Sensory features: The aroma of this pale golden wine is intense – initially more floral (rose petals) than grapey but still more like Muscat than Gewürztraminer. The floral character is underpinned by apricots and something like box, though one associates that smell with Sauvignon Blanc. After that initial captivating impression, the taste is a surprise: still grapey and perfumed but with an extraordinary smoky, almost sweaty, flavour of lapsang souchong and a definite dry saltiness that seems more intense than on the previous vintage. It's bone dry and the skin contact during fermentation seems to have added the scent of chamomile and hay, as well as a firm and unmistakable tannic effect on the finish.

Technical notes

The fruit for this Muscat comes from vineyards densely planted on mainly granite soils in 1975 in the Itata Valley, more than 500 km south of Santiago and just 18 km from the cold Pacific Ocean and its cooling influence. Densely planted bushvines (almost 7,000 vines per ha), which are ungrafted and dry-farmed. The wine undergoes extensive maceration on the skins in the amphorae for six months. The wine is then separated from the skins and put back into the amphorae for another six months before bottling. Nothing except sulfur dioxide is added to the wine, neither yeast nor other substances. It was also unfiltered.

Viejas Tinajas are old terracotta amphorae. The ones used to make the De Martino wine are over 100 years old.

Viejas Tinajas Cinsault Price € 22.50

de martino viejas tinajas hi

De Martino resurrects an old winemaking tradition of using large earthenware jars, known as amphorae or tinajas, that is deeply rooted in rural Chilean winemaking culture to create this all-natural wine.

Sensory features: A lovely fresh nose of red currant jam and violets is well defined. The palate is medium in body with crisp red currant and dark cherry accented by touches of fig and marmalade.

Technical Notes                                                                                                                                           Grape variety: 100% Cinsault - Secano Interior, Itata Valley                                                                             This wine was born with the aim of producing a wine in the most natural possible way, using minimal intervention and recovering an old, Chilean tradition of using terracotta amphorae to make wines, a use which was largely given to these noble vessels to store, age and transport wine. With this goal in mind, the De Martino winemaking team decided to use Cinsault grapes from the Guariligüe area of Coelemu, an area where they still preserve the technique of cultivating vines from old vine stocks, using sustainable management methods and keeping alive traditions such as using horses as a work tool. The vineyard which produces this wine is located 22Km from the Pacific Ocean and 500Km to the South of Santiago. It is a mountainous region with granite soil, gentle rolling hills and a large number of old vineyards. This vineyard in particular is 30 years old. It is unirrigated, ungrafted (no rootstock) and uses the gobelet training system. Cinsault has low-acidity, and that’s why we looked for a vineyard close to the sea, with a cooler climate, so as to strengthen its acidity.

The grapes were harvested toward the end of March. They were then de-stemmed and the grapes were fermented in the amphorae for 2 weeks using carbonic maceration. The wine spent the winter in the amphorae and in spring, following the malolactic fermentation, the wine was bottled without any ltering. It is important to note that no additives (enzymes of artificial yeast) were used, with the exception of a small amount of sulfur dioxide to help preserve the wine.

Best served: Goes well with certain soft cheeses, fresh spider crab, sushi and all kinds of fresh food such as salads, seafood and cold dishes.

Serving Temperature: 12°C

Alcohol content: 13%

Bottle size: 750 ml

Gallardía del Itata Cinsault Price € 15.20

cinsault

The Gallardía del Itata range is sourced from the Itata valley, 400km south of Santiago where viticulture was first practised in Chile as rainfall is 1100mm a year and no irrigation is necessary. Gallardía is a Spanish word for bravery, but is also the name of the flower frequently found in Itata vineyards, and the range was created to reflect the wines’ often floral character. Gallardía is a fresh, elegant wine, notable for its enhanced oral character.

Sensory features:

Pale violet red in colour, on the nose this wine is intense, displaying red fruits, raspberry and cherry. On the palate it is very smooth and with great acidity and where once again the raspberry notes appear.

Technical notes:

Grape variety: 100% Cinsault

Origin:

The dry hinterland, Coelemu.

Geographical zone:

Guariligüe, Itata Valley. In attempting to produce the most natural wine possible with minimal intervention, De Martino’s winemaking team decided to use the Cinsault grape from the Guariligüe area in Coelemu. Here they still preserve ancient cultivation techniques and incorporate sustainable and traditional methods, including the use of horses as a work tool. This wine comes from a vineyard located 22 kilometers from the Pacific Ocean and 500 kilometers south of Santiago. It is a mountainous zone with granite soils, gentle hills and many old vineyards. This particular vineyard is 30 years old, with Goblet-trained, dry farmed vines that are on their original rootstock. The Cinsault is a grape variety with low acidity and thus we chose a vineyard close to the ocean with a cooler climate to enhance its acidity.

Winemaking Process:

This wine underwent a very short maceration with its skins and then later continued fermentation with native yeasts at 20°C. After being destemmed, the whole grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks with native yeasts only. Fermentation is produced with no addition of any oenological products (enzymes or external yeast), and with small quantities of sulfur dioxide. Total maceration lasts 40 days, after which the wine was kept in tanks for seven months and then bottled.

Soil Type: Granite.

Climate: A warm climate region. However, thanks to the inuence of the Pacific Ocean, the climate is cooler than in the rest of the Itata Valley.

Alcohol:13,5%

Serving temperature: 12 – 13°C
