Domaine Paul Blanck

Country: Alsace - France

Region: Alsace

Dating back to the 17th century, Domaine Paul Blanck represents an exemplary synthesis of history and tradition flawlessly combined with innovation. The net result is an invitingly diverse range of stylish, eloquent, and lively wines. The domaine is comprised of 35 hectares that are farmed without the use of chemical insecticides and fertilizers. The Paul Blanck vineyard holdings include three lieux dits (or potential premier crus) as well as five celebrated grand cru vineyards: Schlossberg, Wineck-Schlossberg, Furstentum, Sommerberg and Mambourg. Only 20% of the holdings are located in unnamed vineyards that are not classified. However, just 25-30% of the annual grape production is selected for the grands crus, giving the classic bottlings their impressive structure and freshness. This diversity of terroir coupled with traditional Alsatian varieties provides a style and flavour for everyone to love.

A Dynasty of Winemakers
In 1610, Hans Blanck, the family's Austrian ancestor acquired the first vines in Alsace. In 1846, Jacques Philippe Blanck obtained a medal for his work as a winemaker. In 1927, Paul Blanck, along with a handful of other winemakers, were recognized as the driving force behind turning the site of Schlossberg into a pilot site for a future grand cru. In 1975, with the creation of the grand cru appellation system in Alsace, Schlossberg was the first to be assigned this appellation. Paul's sons Bernard and Marcel Blanck play a crucial role in elevating Domaine Paul Blanck and the notion of grand cru terroir. Bernard and Marcel's sons, cousins Frédéric and Philippe, joined the domaine in 1985. Together they lead the domaine into the 21st century. Philippe Blanck is in charge of external relations and is an ambassador for the domaine as well as the region of Alsace. Frédéric Blanck is in charge of the vineyards and the cellar.

"We are forever searching with passion and respect to enable nature to express itself in our wines. We wish to share with everyone the force and diversity of the Alsace; the richness of the grape varieties, and the 'joie de vivre' of its people." - Frédéric and Philippe Blanck

Sensory features: Intense straw yellow. The nose begins with scents of lemon but with time in the glass the aromas of flowers, peach and apricot pits and grapefruit skin dominate. Medium-dry, this beautiful wine is young and juicy with a palate that’s fresh and well balanced. A lively, approachable Pinot Blanc that’s enjoyable from the first to the last sip.

Technical notes

Grape variety: Pinot Blanc

Soil: Gravel, sand and south-facing clay and limestone land.

Vinification:The juice is extracted with infinite care in our air-bag press. The slow, gentle pressing avoids crushing the stalks and pips. It is carried out in stainless-steel vats equipped with temperature control, a medium which maximises the expression of this variety's aromas.

Once the fermentation is finished, the wine has to be matured. This stage is essential, in order to fix its structure and aromas. As the wine matures, the tiny particules in suspension gradually sink to the bottom of the vat and form a deposit, which contributes richness.

Best served: Excellent along with your favorite seafood, light-flavoured meats, light-medium sauces and mild-flavoured cheeses.
